Sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄) is the most widely used industrial chemical in the world — the starting point for fertilizers, alum and many other chemicals, and a workhorse for metal treatment, textiles and pH control. Kant Exim supplies industrial-grade sulphuric acid 98% from our godown about 15 km from Mundra Port in Kutch, Gujarat.
This guide shows the actual certificate of analysis (COA) results for the acid we supply, explains what each figure means, and covers packing, transport and safe handling.

COA results: what our sulphuric acid 98% tests at
The table below is from the certificate of analysis of a recent lot (September 2026). Every lot is dispatched with its own COA, so you can check the exact figures for the material you receive.
| Parameter | Specification | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Clear / whitish liquid | Clear / whitish liquid |
| Specific gravity at 20 °C | 1.82 – 1.84 | 1.83 |
| Purity (% by weight) | Min. 98.0% | 98.0% + |
| Iron (as Fe) | Max. 20 ppm | 12 ppm |
| Turbidity | Max. 50 NTU | 21 NTU |
Every parameter is inside its limit, and iron and turbidity are well below them: iron at 60% of the maximum and turbidity at under half.
What the numbers mean
Purity (% by weight)
Purity is the strength of the acid: 98% means 98 parts of H₂SO₄ in every 100 parts by weight, the rest being water. This is the strongest grade of ordinary sulphuric acid. Strength matters because you pay for H₂SO₄, not water, and because many processes — dosing, dilution, reaction yields — are calculated on a 98% basis.
Specific gravity
Concentrated sulphuric acid is very dense: a litre of 98% acid weighs about 1.83 kg. A hydrometer reading at your gate is a quick way to confirm you have received concentrated acid, and 1.83 at 20 °C is the expected value. Specific gravity can't separate 98% from slightly weaker acid, though: density barely changes between about 93% and 98%, and a reading well below 1.82 points to diluted acid. The exact strength is measured by titration, which is the purity figure on the COA.
Iron content
Iron is the most common impurity. It comes mainly from contact with carbon-steel tanks and pipelines. Low iron matters where the acid ends up in a product whose colour or purity counts, such as alum and aluminium sulphate, dyes and pigments, or metal finishing. At 12 ppm against a 20 ppm limit, this lot is comfortably within the industrial specification.
Turbidity
Turbidity measures haze from fine suspended particles, in NTU (nephelometric turbidity units). Lower is cleaner. 21 NTU against a 50 NTU maximum indicates clear acid with little suspended matter, which helps where the acid is filtered or dosed through fine nozzles and meters.
Where industrial sulphuric acid 98% is used
- Fertilizers — single superphosphate (SSP), phosphoric acid and ammonium sulphate
- Chemical manufacturing — alum, aluminium sulphate, ferric and other sulphates, and as a reagent or catalyst
- Metal treatment — pickling and cleaning of steel, and ore processing
- Textiles and dyes — dyeing, finishing and dye intermediates
- Water and effluent treatment — pH correction and resin regeneration
- Paper, sugar and general industry — pH control and process chemistry
Battery electrolyte and food or reagent uses need special grades with tighter limits on iron and other metals. If you need one of these, tell us the specification and we will confirm availability.
Supply from near Mundra Port
Our sulphuric acid is stocked at our godown about 15 km from Mundra Port in Kutch, Gujarat. The short haul to the port suits shipments through Mundra, and acid can also be dispatched from the godown by road.
Sulphuric acid is shipped as UN 1830, Class 8 (corrosive), Packing Group II under ADR, IMDG and IATA rules. Depending on quantity it is supplied in road tankers, IBCs, drums or HDPE carboys. Packing and quantity are confirmed with each quotation.
Packed in IBCs for container loads
For container shipments the acid is packed in composite IBCs of 1,650 kg net (UN packaging code 31HA1: a plastic inner tank inside a steel cage, approved for liquid dangerous goods). Each IBC holds 1,650 kg of 98% acid (about 900 litres) and carries the product name, the Class 8 corrosive label and the UN 1830 number.
Inside the container the IBCs are stretch-wrapped, cross-strapped and braced with dunnage airbags, so they cannot shift during the journey.
Handling and safety essentials
Sulphuric acid 98% is extremely corrosive: it causes severe burns to skin and eyes and reacts violently with water. The key points from the safety data sheet are:
- Always add acid to water — never water to acid. Adding water to concentrated acid releases enough heat to boil and spatter.
- Wear protective equipment: chemical goggles with a face shield, neoprene (acid-resistant) gloves, an acid-resistant apron or suit, and rubber boots with trousers worn outside them.
- Keep it away from water, organic materials, alkalis, metal powders, nitrates and chlorates. Contact with most metals releases flammable hydrogen gas, so vent steel storage tanks and keep ignition sources away.
- Exposure limit: ACGIH TLV 1 mg/m³ (8-hour TWA) for acid mist. Provide good ventilation, and install a safety shower and eyewash station in handling areas.
- First aid: flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes and get medical help immediately. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting.
- Spills: contain with dry earth or sand — not water — and neutralise the residue with soda ash or lime before disposal.
Sulphuric acid itself is not flammable, but it can ignite combustible materials and produces sulphur oxides when strongly heated. The full safety data sheet (MSDS / SDS) is available with every order. Read our guide to what to check in an SDS.
