Finger millet, known in India as ragi or nachni, is grown mainly in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra. Its small red-brown grains are known for their high calcium and fibre content.
Ragi is milled into flour for porridge, flatbreads and baked goods, and is widely used in baby food, malted drinks and health-food products. It is naturally gluten-free.
